Author Kerry Greenwood, renowned for her Phryne Fisher murder mystery novels, passed away at the age of 70 following an illness. Her partner, writer David Greagg, shared that she had a heartfelt farewell ceremony in Melbourne’s Yarraville. Greenwood, who lived in Seddon, was a private person and had been unable to stay at home due to her deteriorating condition. She died on March 26, 2023. Greagg also mentioned that her condition worsened quickly, leading to a swift passing. Born in Footscray, Melbourne, Greenwood developed a passion for writing from a young age and later studied English and law at the University of Melbourne. She worked as a criminal defense lawyer for over two decades, which influenced her writing, including her popular Phryne Fisher series and the Corinna Chapman series. Greenwood was awarded a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to Australian crime writing and received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2020. She continued writing despite health issues and worked as a solicitor. Greenwood’s death has sparked an outpouring of support online, with tributes from fans and fellow authors, praising her kindness, generosity, and impact on the literary world. Her legacy as an author and advocate for justice will be remembered.
