Authorities Accuse Individual of Federal Hate Crime for Assault during Colorado Protest for Release of Israeli Detainees | Incident in Boulder, Colorado

A man has been charged with a federal hate crime and multiple other felonies after allegedly using a makeshift flamethrower and incendiary devices to attack a crowd of people raising awareness for Israeli hostages in Gaza, resulting in 12 injuries. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, is accused of shouting “Free Palestine” during the attack on Sunday. The FBI states that Soliman planned the attack for a year and specifically targeted a “Zionist group.” If convicted, Soliman would face a lifetime sentence with a minimum of over 600 years. Soliman was also accused of using Molotov cocktails when unable to obtain a gun. An FBI affidavit reported that Soliman confessed to the attack, stating that he would do it again. Authorities claimed Soliman was an Egyptian national and in the US without legal status. Four women and four men between the ages of 52 and 88, including a Holocaust survivor, were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to “very serious.” The attack took place on the Pearl Street Mall during an event organized by Run for Their Lives, a group aiming to draw attention to hostages taken after the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. Soliman is charged with 16 counts of attempted murder and is being held on a $10 million bond. Soliman was reportedly injured and treated at a hospital. Donald Trump and Stephen Miller have condemned the attack and linked Soliman’s presence in the US to Biden’s immigration policies.
