The victim of a pedestrian accident in central London has been identified as Aalia Mahomed, a 20-year-old woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene near King’s College London after a van was driven onto the pavement in Aldwych.
A statement from her family through the Metropolitan Police described Aalia as a “bright, kind and beautiful soul.” Another woman, 27, is in a serious but non-life-threatening condition in the hospital, while a 23-year-old man who was taken to the hospital has been discharged.
The driver of the dark grey Ford Transit van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was later arrested again on suspicion of drug driving offenses and has been released on bail as the police continue their investigation.
Chief Superintendent Thomas Naughton, of the Met’s roads and transport policing command, stated that the investigation is ongoing and complex, with officers gathering CCTV footage and witness statements. The incident is not believed to be terrorism-related.
Aalia’s family remembered her as a joyful and devoted individual who will be deeply missed. Specialist liaison officers are providing support to the family, and DCI Christina Jessah has urged the public not to share false speculation about the incident online.
