Aviation Tragedy: Search and Recovery Efforts Employ Sniffer Dogs at Scene of Fatal Air India Plane Crash Near Ahmedabad

Rescue teams equipped with sniffer dogs are searching the crash site of a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that collided with a residential area in India’s Ahmedabad city, resulting in at least 265 fatalities including both passengers and people on the ground. One passenger, a British national of Indian origin named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, miraculously survived the crash.

The deeply disturbing incident occurred Thursday, with the jet’s tailpiece found embedded in the second floor of a hostel for medical staff from a nearby hospital. The nose and front wheel landed on a canteen building where students were having lunch, according to witnesses.

The exact number of deceased is still being determined, with further body parts being recovered. The victims onboard included two pilots, ten cabin crew members, 217 adults, 11 children, and two infants. A majority of passengers were Indian nationals, with 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian also on the plane.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the event as “heartbreaking beyond words” and visited the devastated area. Air India has stated that they are treating the sole survivor in the hospital. Footage shows Ramesh severely injured and limping towards an ambulance, stating he had no idea how he managed to escape the plane.

The plane crashed less than a minute after takeoff, with a mayday call issued moments before the incident. Experts currently speculate that the cause could be a double engine failure, possibly due to a bird strike.
