At least seven international flights from Bali have been cancelled following the eruption of a volcano in eastern Indonesia. The volcano, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on the island of Flores, erupted for nearly 11 minutes on Thursday night, leading to the highest alert status being declared.
As of 9:45 AM on Friday, seven international flights, including six Jetstar flights to Australia and one Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur, have been cancelled at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Several other flights, both domestic and international, have been delayed.
The eruption resulted in a dark ash column shooting up to 8 kilometers into the sky. Fortunately, nearby villages have not reported any damages, but authorities have warned of potential volcanic mudflows due to heavy rainfall. The alert level for the volcano has been raised to its highest.
An exclusion zone of seven to eight kilometers has been established around the volcano.
Laki-Laki, meaning “man” in Indonesian, is paired with a volcano named after the Indonesian word for “woman.” Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
