Belgian royal family member faces legal defeat in quest for additional social security perks beyond existing royal stipend | Belgium

A Belgian prince has failed in his legal attempt to obtain additional social security benefits on top of his royal allowance, as a court dismissed his claim as “unfounded.” This marks the first case of its kind in the country’s nearly 200-year history. Prince Laurent, the youngest of three children of the former king and queen, argued that his work entitled him to the same coverage provided to independent entrepreneurs. He insisted this was based on principle, not financial need. However, the Brussels court ruled on Monday that Prince Laurent’s duties more closely resemble those of civil servants, who receive specific benefits but are not part of an overarching social security system. His lawyer, Olivier Rijckaert, stated that they are considering whether to appeal, noting the detailed and reasoned nature of the judgment. Prince Laurent’s annual state allowance was reduced by 15% in 2018 for a year due to unauthorized meetings with foreign dignitaries. He felt entitled to such benefits as a resident, comparing his situation to that of immigrants who register for such rights in the country. Despite living rent-free and receiving substantial financial support, Prince Laurent’s net income, when adjusted for expenses, is comparable to an average senior executive’s salary in Belgium but lacks the typical full social security benefits. He has been involved in founding an animal welfare organization and has participated in numerous official visits and board memberships, leading to a busy schedule. Additionally, Prince Laurent has raised concerns about his family’s financial future post-retirement and the implications of lacking social security for medical expenses and sick pay. The prince’s bid for social security coverage has sparked a broader conversation within Belgian royalty about financial compensation for public duties.
