Bill Maher has responded to a satirical essay written by Larry David in the New York Times, which compared Maher’s positive account of having dinner with Donald Trump to sharing a meal with Adolf Hitler. Maher, who has been a vocal critic of Trump in the past, had dinner with the US president and a group of his supporters on 31 March. However, on an episode of his talkshow Real Time on 11 April, Maher described Trump as “gracious” and “more self-aware than he lets on.” The New York Times then published a satirical piece written by David, where he takes on the perspective of a critic of Hitler who accepts an invitation to dine with him, and ultimately decides they are not that different after all. Maher, in an appearance on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored, dismissed David’s comparison, saying it is insulting to the 6 million dead Jews who were victims of the Holocaust, and stated that Hitler is the “GOAT of evil.” Despite considering David a friend, Maher did not appreciate the satirical piece and believes there needs to be a better way to engage with differing viewpoints, rather than resorting to insults.
