Boys Outperform Girls in Math and Science in England, Study Shows

Boys in England have significantly outscored girls in maths and science according to a recent analysis from University College London (UCL), contradicting recent claims that boys are falling behind girls in school. The study used data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and found that boys in both year 5 and year 9 scored higher than girls in these subjects, compared to results before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The gap was most pronounced in mathematics, where boys’ confidence was strongly linked to higher achievement. The results showed that boys in year 9 scored 538 compared to girls’ 512, with confidence levels notably higher among boys. In science, boys overturned a previous girls’ lead by a 14-point margin, scoring 538 to the girls’ 524.

These findings counter arguments from various political and think tank perspectives that boys are disadvantaged in England’s education system. The study also highlighted significant disparities based on socioeconomic status, with pupils from homes with fewer books facing notable challenges in maths and science.

The researchers suggest that while confidence, a sense of belonging, and absenteeism could be contributing factors to the disparity, more research is needed to fully understand and address these issues. Additionally, the study underlines the need for extra support for disadvantaged pupils to address the persistent gaps in educational outcomes influenced by socioeconomic factors.
