British couple held captive by the Taliban recount harsh realities in a Kabul prison | Afghanistan

A British man who has been held captive by the Taliban for more than nine weeks described his living conditions as being in “the nearest thing to hell I can imagine.” Peter Reynolds, 79, spoke from Pul-e-Charkhi maximum-security jail in Kabul, where he and his wife, Barbie, have been held. Reynolds expressed his fears for her safety and shared that he is being held with rapists and murderers. He stated that he is given only one meal a day and believes they are targeting him for their work in schools in Afghanistan. The couple stayed in the country after the Taliban took power in 2021, and their friend Faye Hall was also detained before being released recently. They were initially detained in February when they returned home. Reynolds also mentioned that the Taliban confiscated books from their home, claiming they were against Islam, and said that more than 30 people who worked with them have been interrogated without any crime being found. He believes that the Taliban is making a mistake and needs to face up to it.
