British ice dancer set to compete with same-sex partner in Finland following rule modification | UK news

A British ice dancer, Millie Colling, and her partner, Emma Aalto, are set to become Finland’s first same-sex team to compete in an ice dance competition after the Finnish Skating Federation amended its rules. Born in Gateshead, Colling moved to Finland at the age of six, while Aalto, a fashion student, has been skating since the age of five. The two, who met two years ago and quickly found a connection, will compete in a qualifier for the national championships next month. They are supported by their coach, Neil Brown, who assisted in persuading the skating federation to change the rules, referring to ice dance partners as Skater A and Skater B rather than man and woman. The duo emphasizes that their partnership is about sharing their passion for skating, with Colling stating, “We were immediately on the same level, we really clicked.” They also acknowledge the influence of retired Olympic champions Madison Hubbell and Gabriella Papadakis, who performed together to promote same-sex pairs in competition. Both dancers stress that their participation is about breaking down barriers and opening up opportunities for everyone, not just for queer individuals. Aalto adds, “The point is to be opening possibilities for everyone, not just for queer people.” They are aware that further changes are needed to allow them to participate in the national competition in December but remain hopeful for the future. Despite recognizing they may not win, they express excitement at the chance to compete and the unique freedom skating brings them. Aalto describes it as “the best feeling – it feels like home.” Their story serves as a powerful signal of change for the ice dance community.
