Keir Starmer’s government is being urged to establish a new “national occupational health service” to address the worklessness crisis resulting from ill-health. The Fabian Society proposes that this service should be funded by a £2 billion levy on Britain’s largest employers. The aim is to create a universal at-work health service that would help keep more people in employment, funded by introducing a health element to the incoming growth and skills levy. The largest tenth of businesses would be responsible for paying for occupational health services, which would be delivered by private providers. This proposal aligns with the government’s objective of reducing economic inactivity and promoting employment. The Fabian Society report, titled “Nye’s Lost Legacy” after Labour’s health secretary Aneurin Bevan, presents a positive outcome for employers and the economy as a whole.
