Cambodia has calls for an immediate ceasefire with Thailand following two days of deadly disputes, resulting in at least 32 fatalities and thousands displaced. The country’s envoy to the United Nations made the request and stated that Cambodia also urged for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The border dispute between the two countries, which has long been contentious, escalated into intense violence on Thursday, involving jets, artillery, tanks, and ground troops. This situation prompted the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting concerning the crisis.
Further fighting was reported on Saturday, even after the initial day of clashes. Cambodia’s Department of Defense stated that heavy artillery shells had been fired in multiple locations, leading to further casualties. Thailand, however, expressed its openness to negotiating a resolution, possibly with the assistance of Malaysia. Nonetheless, no concrete actions have been taken as of yet. The recent outbreak of hostilities has exacerbated a long-standing border dispute between the two nations.
