Words like “Skibidi,” “tradwife,” and “delulu” are now part of the Cambridge Dictionary, indicating the growing impact of the TikTok generation on the English language.
Contrary to those expecting these terms to be fleeting internet trends, they are now considered a permanent fixture.
According to Colin McIntosh, the lexical program manager at the dictionary, the internet is significantly shaping the English language.
These words, like “skibidi” and “delulu,” are now part of the standard lexicon due to their staying power and cultural impact.
“Skibidi,” for example, is used especially by younger generations to emphasize statements, gaining popularity from a viral video on YouTube.
The term “tradwife” refers to influencers on social media platforms who celebrate traditional gender roles and childcare responsibilities.
“Delulu,” stemming from “delusional,” is used to describe believing in things that are not real or true, often found in a post-truth world.
“Broligarchy,” a term for powerful tech industry leaders whose platforms spread many of these new words, is also featured in the dictionary.
