More than 150,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition calling for their country to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship due to his alliance with Donald Trump, who has threatened to make Canada the 51st state of the US.
The petition was launched by British Columbia author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat parliamentary member Charlie Angus. Musk gained Canadian citizenship through his mother, who is from Regina, Saskatchewan.
The petition accuses Musk of participating in activities that go against Canada’s national interest by acting as an adviser to Trump. It asks Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk’s Canadian passport and citizenship.
Trump has often mocked Trudeau and Musk has supported Trump’s plans to cut the size of the US federal government.
The petition requires 500 signatures to be presented to Canada’s House of Commons. It has gathered about 157,000 signatures.
