Charitable Organizations Increase Efforts to Persuade Keir Starmer to Abolish the Two-Child Benefit Cap | Child Benefits Reform

Charities and Labour-affiliated groups are increasing pressure on Keir Starmer to eliminate the two-child limit on benefits. This action is supported by polling data showing high levels of support for addressing youth poverty, a position held equally by Labour voters considering Reform UK. According to a survey commissioned by charity groups, including Save the Children and the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), there is strong public support for prioritizing families with children and the belief that children should be a priority for government spending. Alison Garnham of CPAG stressed that there remains strong public backing for Labour’s manifesto pledge to tackle child poverty and called for the eradication of the two-child limit as a starting point. There are also suggestions that Labour should adopt legally binding targets to reduce child poverty and make these a key part of the government’s mission. Despite the government’s so far steadfast position against removing the limit, polling suggests that even Labour voters drawn to Reform remain committed to seeing child poverty addressed.
