China Accelerates Global Nuclear Arsenal Expansion with Latest Research Findings

China is currently expanding its nuclear arsenal at a much faster rate than previously anticipated, according to a recent report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In its findings, the SIPRI report estimates that China now possesses at least 600 nuclear warheads, with the country adding approximately 100 warheads per year to its stockpile since 2023. This growth rate could potentially enable China to have around 1,500 nuclear warheads by the year 2035, which is nearly the same number currently maintained by Russia and the US for immediate use. While the spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Guo Jiakun, did not directly comment on the report, they emphasized the nation’s commitment to a self-defense nuclear strategy and its refusal to participate in an arms race. Nonetheless, concerns about China’s nuclear capabilities continue to grow, particularly with regards to their impact on the geopolitical situation with Taiwan. The expansion of China’s nuclear arsenal has been linked to a growing number of ICBM facilities being constructed in the country, raising alarms about a possible new nuclear arms race. SIPRI’s findings reflect a shift away from the post-Cold War trend of reducing global nuclear arsenals.
