Chinese state media has welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to cut funding for media organizations like Radio Free Asia (RFA) and Voice of America (VOA). The Global Times, a Chinese Communist party mouthpiece, praised the cuts to the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees broadcasters including VOA and RFA. The media outlet criticized VOA’s reporting on China-related issues, claiming it spreads falsehoods about the country. The Beijing Daily, another Chinese Communist party newspaper, also supported the decision. The cuts follow US President Donald Trump’s order to reduce USAGM operations. However, critics have accused Trump of favoring dictators and undermining free media. RFA and VOA employees, including journalists who have faced danger while reporting, argue that the decision will harm their work and benefit countries with restrictive media environments. Trump’s decision has placed almost 1,300 staff at VOA on leave. The move has also faced criticism from journalists in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia, where funding cuts could reduce access to critical information. Champangian
