A UK pay TV religious channel has been fined £150,000 for broadcasting an evangelist’s program selling “miracle spring water” claiming to cure diseases like lung cancer and diabetes and bring financial success. The commercial regulator Ofcom fined the operator of The Word Network, which targets the Christian community, following an investigation into Peter Popoff Ministries’ broadcasts.
During the two episodes in question, the presenter and his wife repeatedly requested viewers to order the ministry’s miracle spring water. Popoff, a US televangelist who has previously faced regulatory actions, made claims about the water’s miraculous healing properties and presented testimonials from his ministry members about recoveries from cancer, diabetes, intestinal disease, and successful business ventures.
Popoff reinforced these claims by saying, “Did you hear that? You mean God took care… after you used the miracle spring water?” The channel’s operator, initially unclear about Ofcom’s concerns, argued they stemmed from “cultural or market differences”.
However, the parent company then decided to prevent future airings of Peter Popoff Ministries on its UK channel. In its judgment, Ofcom noted that such claims may cause harm, as they deal with viewers’ health and wealth, and that the breaches were serious but not a deliberate or reckless act by the licensee.
