Co-op staff are voicing concerns regarding their safety and security due to insufficient staffing, with reports of threats while working alone on the shop floor. The shortage of staff is particularly noticeable during busy times and when dealing with online orders and managing self-checkouts and tills in smaller stores. The issue has escalated with the introduction of Project Lunar, a scheme aimed at having only one person on duty in quieter stores. Despite the Co-op’s extensive campaign against shoplifting, staff are facing significant risks, including threats from shoplifters armed with weapons. Many staff and customers are calling for a change in the Co-op’s staffing policy, arguing that a greater presence on the shop floor acts as a stronger deterrent against theft and abuse. Despite the cyber-attack which has left many stores understaffed, the Co-op continues to prioritize profit over increasing staff numbers. The company, however, maintains its commitment to providing a safe working environment and combatting retail crime by investing in the latest security measures.
