Cold fronts sweep across south-east Australia, bringing snow flurries to four states, marking latest weather phenomenon | Australian weather update

A series of cold fronts will cross south-eastern Australia during the last week of winter, bringing snowflakes to four states. Sarah Scully, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, said these fronts and troughs will sweep across the country, causing wet and windy weather.

The cold fronts on Friday and Saturday will push cold air from Antarctica into central and northern areas, leading to #snow in alpine regions in Victoria and New South Wales (NSW), with 50cm to 80cm expected. Furthermore, the snow level could reach low elevations, with Tasmania likely to have snow down to 300m, Victoria down to 600m, and NSW down to 700m.

In Victoria, the snow is expected in areas such as the Grampians, Macedon Ranges, and Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne’s eastern part. In NSW, snow is expected in the central tablelands, reaching as far north as Orange. Sub-zero temperatures are forecast for Australian Alps, where popular ski destinations like Falls Creek, Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, and the Snowy Mountains will be affected. It is even possible that South Australia could see a dusting of snow, a first since 2022.

The cold fronts started their journey towards NSW on Wednesday and later moved towards south-western Victoria with strong winds. After a lull in the weather, another significant cold front could bring potential low-pressure systems on Friday and Saturday. While the weather is generally expected to be chilly, with temperatures as much as 12C below average, this is good news for the northern tableland region, still recovering from major flooding, which affected the Namoi River.

The weather updates have been updated for Thursday, indicating severe weather warnings for areas in Victoria and NSW, including damaging winds. The complex weather pattern for the coming days will bring additional wet and windy conditions.
