Daniel Blumberg, a British composer, triumphs at the Oscars by receiving the award for best original score for his work on the film The Brutalist.

Daniel Blumberg, a young British composer, has secured his first Oscar for his second musical score in a feature film, scoring for Brady Corbet’s movie, The Brutalist. The 34-year-old previously received a BAFTA for the score, which garnered significant acclaim and plays a crucial role in the film. The Brutalist portrays the story of László Tóth, a fictional Hungarian architect who moves to the US after surviving the Holocaust. Blumberg’s music combines piano and saxophone jazz with harsh brass and percussion, mirroring Tóth’s internal struggles. His work has been favorably compared to that of Mica Levi, another young British avant-garde composer and frequent collaborator of Jonathan Glazer. Blumberg’s previous feature film scoring credit is for Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, which earned him an Ivor Novello award. He co-wrote The Brutalist with his wife, Corbet, who also wrote the film’s script. The film is dedicated to Scott Walker, who scored Corbet’s previous films. Blumberg is also known as a former member and lead singer of Cajun Dance Party from 2005–09 and as a member of indie rock band Yuck. He has since released solo work, with his latest album, Gut, being released two years ago. In his acceptance speech at the Oscars, Blumberg paid tribute to his friends at Cafe Oto in Dalston, London, his home base for much of his work, and the “radical, uncompromising” musical collaborators on The Brutalist. He expressed gratitude towards director Corbet, acknowledging their artistic kinship. Beyond film scores, Blumberg is also recognized for his work in short films, his association with the British Film Institute’s 2018 Agnès Varda season, and his proficiency in the art form of silverpoint.
