Data reveals that Trump’s reduction in USAid funds will significantly affect international climate aid financing.

Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from overseas aid programs will drastically reduce global climate finance from developed countries, potentially leading to severe consequences for vulnerable nations. The US was responsible for approximately $8 out of every $100 that flowed from developed to developing countries last year to help cut greenhouse gas emissions and handle extreme weather impacts, according to data from Carbon Brief. The total spending on climate finance last year was $11 billion, and a similar amount was expected for this year under Joe Biden’s plans. However, early actions taken by Trump upon resuming the presidency, including withdrawing the US from the Paris climate agreement, have severely cut overseas aid efforts, including climate finance. The White House has halted much of the funding to USAid, the international Green Climate Fund, and the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, impacting the ability of poor countries to cope with extreme weather.
