Five years ago, a $250m plan to remake Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature film, seemed like a brilliant idea. The project, since titled Disney’s Snow White, has become a headache for the studio. Press has barely been allowed near the remake’s stars, Rachel Zegler (Colombian-Polish descent), who plays Snow White, and Israeli actor Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, while the film omits dwarves entirely. Advance ticket sales are underwhelming and the film hasn’t been shown to reviewers. Yet, it’s unclear why a film based on a classic fairy tale should cause such controversy.
