Democratic members of Congress are urging the Trump administration to recognise Palestinian statehood in a letter shared with The Guardian, according to a draft obtained by the publication. The letter, led by Congressman Ro Khanna of California and signed by a number of House progressives, calls for the immediate protection of Palestinians and the acknowledgment of their rights as a people and nation. The call comes as concerns over humanitarian conditions in Gaza grow and as several Western allies of Israel have committed to recognizing a Palestinian state at the UN general assembly. The lack of support from the Trump administration, which sees statehood as rewarding the Hamas group, is clear. However, this stance may not reflect the opinions of all members of Congress.
