Currently, European travelers do not appear to be deterred from visiting the US, at least not according to official figures. However, Eric Dresin, the secretary general of the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations, predicts that there may be difficulties ahead for travelers in these turbulent times.
Rüger, the Frick’s director, is committed to highlighting the museum’s roots in Europe. He notes that the whole collection of the Frick comes from Europe and hopes that his collection will be a testament to the strong connections that exist between the old and new worlds.
With reciprocal tariffs threatening the market, and the Trump administration threatening to cut funding for museums and libraries, the Frick’s mission to promote cultural ties between the US and Europe could not come at a more important time. The museum’s inaugural exhibit, “Vermeer’s Love Letters,” will showcase three iconic works from the Dutch master, which will include the Frick’s own “Mistress and Maid,” as well as two loans from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Ireland.
Overall, the Frick’s renovated space, complete with updated galleries on the upper floor, is poised to make a strong statement about the enduring significance of European art in the modern world.
