Directors of ‘No Other Land’ criticize US policies: ‘Obstructing the road’ to peace as they receive documentary Oscar

The documentary feature film “No Other Land,” which is based in the West Bank, has been successful in winning this year’s best documentary Oscar. Created by a Palestinian-Israeli collective, the movie triumphed over other competition, including “Black Box Diaries,” “Porcelain War,” and “Sugarcane.”

“The UK should know what their government is supporting: The Israeli and Palestinian film-makers shining a light on West Bank violence” was another notable aspect related to the film. It originally premiered at the Berlin film festival last year, where it won the Berlinale documentary award. The film, made between 2019 and 2023, focuses on the steady forced displacement of Palestinians in Masafer Yatta, a region targeted by Israeli forces.

Directors Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, during their acceptance speech, thanked the Academy and addressed important issues surrounding violence and ethnic cleansing. Adra, who recently became a father, expressed his hope for a better future for his daughter, free from the “constant fear of violence, home demolitions, and forced displacement.”

Abraham, joining the sentiments of unity, emphasized the collaborative efforts of Palestinians and Israelis in the making of the film, calling for a political solution without ethnicity supremacy, and national rights for both people. He criticized the foreign policy stance, suggesting that it obstructs the path towards true security and freedom for both communities.

The lack of formal distribution in the US was another significant point highlighted, which the filmmakers believe to be politically motivated. Despite this, due to high demand, the film was self-released in nearly 100 theaters independently, with sold-out showings across the United States.
