Disruption Alert: Storm Floris Prompts Scottish Government Emergency Meeting as UK Travel Disruptions Persist Amid Weather Warnings

The Scottish government held emergency meetings regarding Storm Floris, which caused significant disruption and poor weather throughout the country. The meetings involved the Metropolitan Office, Police Scotland, Transport Scotland, and various other transport and utility companies.

Storm Floris resulted in power outages and almost 120 rail incidents, with 119 incidents affecting the rail network, including 75 incidents relating to trees. With strong winds reaching up to 90mph in some areas, further clean-up efforts will be needed to ensure train lines are safe and operational before restoring a full service. Wet and windy weather is forecasted for late Wednesday and Thursday, and affected train routes will need to be checked before they can be reopened.

ScotRail has advised customers to check their journey details through apps, websites, or JourneyCheck prior to travel on Tuesday. Canceled Caledonian Sleeper Services and delayed or canceled LNER and TransPennine Express services are also among the issues caused by Storm Floris.

Ministers stated that utilities companies are working to reconnect homes experiencing power outages, and trunk road companies are removing fallen trees and debris from damaged infrastructure on roads. The Scottish government has issued an amber warning and advises the public to stay informed, keep themselves and others safe, and avoid travel if possible.

The Met Office reported a gust of 134mph at Cairn Gorm in the Highlands and 80mph at South Uist. Several bridges were closed, including the Forth Bridge and others to high-sided vehicles due to the wind. A swathe of Edinburgh festival fringe events and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on Monday were canceled.

Mike Silverstone, the Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, mentioned another period of unseasonable wet and windy weather is expected late on Wednesday and into Thursday, mainly affecting northwestern parts of the UK.
