The mother of Jade Young, a victim of the Bondi Junction stabbings, has described her daughter’s murder as a “nightmare” and the result of “years of neglect” in the mental health system. Elizabeth Young addressed the New South Wales coroners court, expressing her anguish and highlighting the devastating impact of her daughter’s tragic death. She emphasized that her intelligent, compassionate, and “slightly goofy” daughter can no longer participate in the future. The attack by Joel Cauchi, a schizophrenic man, on April 13, 2024, resulted in the death of six individuals and left several others injured. Elizabeth criticized the cumulative failures of various systems, including the mental health sector, for allowing such tragedy to occur. Despite the ongoing inquest, she asserts that increased funding and better security measures would not bring back her daughter. The inquest is examining potential shortcomings in healthcare, the preparedness of the shopping center, and the response of law enforcement and emergency services.
