A person charged with murder is connected to a 24-year-old woman’s shallow grave on a beach through DNA evidence and a distinctive European car, a jury has been informed. Rajwinder Singh has denied the charges in court, more than six years after the woman’s body was discovered at an isolated beach in northern Queensland. During the same period, Singh’s phone did not connect to any towers, but Cordingley’s phone moved southward. Multiple sightings of a blue Alfa Romeo sedan on surveillance footage correlated to the locations traced by Cordingley’s phone activity. The prosecution noted that the vehicle matched the one owned by Singh.
The jury was shown photographs of a mound of sand covering Cordingley’s body after it was found shortly before dawn on October 22, 2018. A stick found with the body carried DNA that matched Singh with a high probability. Cordenly suffered fatal wounds, having been stabbed in the chest and hands, with her throat cut.
After the discovery of the body, Singh left for New Delhi the following day and remained out of sight until being traced back to India in November 2022. The prosecution highlighted that he had not returned to his family, lost his house, failed to pay the mortgage, and did not return to work as a hospital nurse. The defense lawyer, Angus Edwards, encouraged the jury to consider that anyone at the beach could be responsible. He questioned the strength of the prosecution’s evidence concerning phone data, DNA, and the Alfa Romeo and pointed out the police’s thoroughness in investigating Singh but wondered if other suspects received the same level of scrutiny.
