Relatives of Joël Le Scouarnec, a French surgeon accused of sexually abusing 299 young patients during their sedation or operation recovery, have described his dual personality at his trial in Vannes, Brittany. They described him as having a “Jekyll and Hyde” character. One of Le Scouarnec’s cousins who visited him in prison, where he is already serving a 15-year sentence for abusing four children, said she believed there were two persons within him. The surgeon is on trial for alleged abuse between 1989 and 2014. Le Scouarnec’s brother spoke about the family’s silence concerning incest and abuse, which was not reported. Le Scouarnec kept detailed notes of his alleged abuse, including victims’ names, addresses, dates, and locations. Despite his 2005 conviction for possessing child abuse images, which carried a four-month suspended sentence, he was allowed to continue practicing. The trial is expected to last four months.
