Driver Responsible for Father’s Death and Son’s Injuries Sent 44 Snapchats at 100km/h Before Tragic Accident in Victoria

A 23-year-old man, Peter Agius, has been sentenced to at least six years in prison for a car crash that killed a beloved father, Adam Sutton, and left his six-year-old son severely injured. The incident occurred in January 2023 when Agius, while traveling at 100km/h on a busy Victorian road, sent and received 44 Snapchat messages over a 12km drive. His last Snapchat interaction was just 20 seconds before the fatal crash, which happened after Adam’s vehicle attempted to make a right turn from a standing position. This is not Agius’s first driving offense; he previously faced sanctions for dangerous driving when police pursued him and was involved in careless driving that required him to take a road trauma awareness course. The judge branded Agius’s behavior as “extreme inattention” and underscored the devastating impact his actions had on Adam’s family. Family members spoke to the court about the profound love and grief they now endure following Adam’s tragic death.
