Australians in the major cities can expect warm and sunny conditions to kick off the Easter long weekend, with temperatures forecast to be above average in cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Hobart on Good Friday. According to meteorologist Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology, the weekend is expected to begin on a positive note with temperatures several degrees above average, particularly in New South Wales, where conditions should stay warm and sunny for most of the long weekend.
In Sydney, Easter Sunday is predicted to be the warmest day, with a high of 29 degrees Celsius. However, weather conditions in southern states will shift as a cold front moves in on Saturday, introducing cloud, cooler temperatures, and showers to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Hobart. Melbournians are expected to see a high of 20s on Friday drop to 19 degrees Celsius by Sunday, while Adelaide and Hobart will experience a similar decline from warm to cooler temperatures over the weekend. Rainfall is expected to increase over southwestern Australia, especially on Easter Sunday and Monday.
Queenslanders should enjoy a sunny Easter, with Brisbane anticipating clear skies and warm weather throughout the long weekend. Western Australia will also see predominantly sunny weather, although temperatures in Perth may fluctuate. In Canberra, Saturday is expected to be the warmest day with temperatures reaching 26 degrees Celsius.
A significant weather system in the Tasman Sea is likely to generate hazardous surf conditions along the east coast from Thursday to Sunday. While this follows recent extreme surf conditions and record-breaking wave heights, the most dangerous surf is predicted for Good Friday, which could also persist into Saturday. Hines notes that this combination of good weather and hazardous surf could pose safety risks, particularly during the holiday period.
Climate change data indicates that Australia’s land surface has warmed by 1.5 degrees Celsius since 1910, increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, storms, and coastal erosion.
