Easter egg purchases made early by shoppers contribute to the rising food inflation in UK supermarkets.

Food inflation rose in the last month due to increased prices of chocolate and confectionery. Despite the later incidence of Easter this year, consumers have already spent £134 million on Easter eggs and seasonal sweets. The sales of the UK’s main retailers increased by 3.2%, close to the 3.5% grocery inflation in the month ending on March 23. According to industry analysts Kantar, this was a slight decrease from the previous month’s 3.3% inflation. The supermarket chain Lidl showed the highest growth in sales, by 9.1%. Ocado, an online food retailer, also saw the largest overall sales increase, by 11%. In contrast, Asda, the third largest supermarket in the UK, experienced a decline in sales by 5.6%.
