Elton John opens up about the emotional burden of his declining vision.

Elton John has recently spoken about his struggles with losing his eyesight, which has made it difficult for him to enjoy simple pleasures such as watching his young sons play sports. In a post on social media from last year, he disclosed that a severe eye infection has significantly impacted his vision, leaving him with limited sight in one eye. During an interview with The Times, the singer, who has two boys aged 14 and 12 with his husband, filmmaker David Furnish, mentioned that he can no longer watch television or read, and hasn’t been able to see anything since July of the previous year. He expressed feelings of distress over not being able to see his boys playing rugby and soccer, as these experiences are important to him.

Despite his challenges, John remains positive, acknowledging his fortunate life and the support of his family. He pointed out that while his eye condition has made it harder to engage in activities like recording music, he recently collaborated with US singer Brandi Carlile on a song titled “Who Believes In Angels?” This collaboration was made possible with the help of producer Andrew Watt and his longtime songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin. John also shared that before the release of their album earlier this month, he and Carlile hosted an evening of performance and storytelling at the London Palladium.

Reflecting on his career and life, John mentioned how having children changed his perspective, shifting his focus from pursuing a never-ending tour schedule to valuing the time he spends with his family. He expressed a desire for his legacy to be remembered as a great father. Despite the challenges of his eye condition, John remains optimistic about the future, considering music to be the greatest gift he has received and looking forward to the activities and creations yet to come.
