Chris Kluwe, a former NFL punter, has reportedly been fired from his coaching job at Edison High School in Huntington Beach following his participation in a heated protest at a recent city council meeting. Kluwe was speaking against a council decision to erect a plaque at the local library, which he argued had ties to the MAGA movement. He was arrested at the meeting for disrupting the proceedings and has since been charged with a misdemeanor.
In comments to The Guardian, Kluwe maintained that his dismissal illustrates MAGA’s foundational negativity and desire to tear down rather than build. He expressed doubt that the school would find another ex-NFL player to take up the coaching role.
Speaking at the council meeting, Kluwe had strong words for MAGA, equating it with Nazi ideologies. His protest was met with disapproval from conservative council members, some of whom criticized the disturbance and claimed that it was not peaceful.
Kluwe will face court in April over his arrest. He noted the possibility of ACLU involvement, suggesting concern about the legality of his charge. During his NFL career, Kluwe was vocal on social issues and claimed he was released by the Vikings due to his beliefs. His coaching tenure saw a challenging season for the freshman team at Edison High School. The school district has been invited to respond to the situation.
