South-east Queensland and northern New South Wales are on alert for flash flooding and damaging winds as over 330,000 buildings are without power due to ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts up to 700mm of rain and destructive gusts in the region through to Monday. The alert follows a series of tragedies, including the confirmation by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of a 61-year-old man who died after being swept off a bridge by fast-moving flood waters near Dorrigo. Two military trucks, each carrying 16 Australian Defence Force personnel, crashed near Lismore while assisting with road-clearing efforts, resulting in 13 injuries, six of them serious. On Sunday, 315,000 buildings in south-east Queensland and 16,000 in NSW were without power, with swollen rivers and flash flooding warnings issued. Isolated rainfalls of up to 400mm are expected, with the weather system set to shift to coastal parts of NSW and start easing conditions in south-east Queensland from Monday.
