The Coalition has launched a series of attack ads targeting independent candidates, known as the “teals,”, and has spent $137,000 on Facebook ads alone through its “teals revealed” campaign page. The Coalition’s campaign, however, focuses only on a fraction of the parliamentary voting data, failing to present a comprehensive view. For instance, it does not address how the teals compare to other independents in terms of voting with the Coalition. It also overlooks whether Coalition members vote alongside the teals on motions introduced by the teals. These are points that voters in teal-held or marginal seats may want answered. In response, Guardian Australia conducted an extensive analysis of how the crossbench voted during the 47th parliament. This included excluding two independents who were former Liberal party members. The analysis compared the votes of all parties, including the Greens, in every division (vote on legislation or procedural matters) held in the House of Representatives. It calculated the agreement on votes between each politician and party when both were present. The results were visualized in a heatmap, sorted by the voting agreement with the Coalition but re-sortable for other parties and politicians. The Guardian Australia’s analysis aimed to provide a more complete picture of the voting dynamics in the 47th parliament.
