Two workers were performing routine maintenance when they discovered the baby’s lifeless body.
The police in Western Australia have confirmed that a woman in her 30s is providing assistance with the investigation into the baby’s death.
“The woman is receiving appropriate care and support,” stated the police in a statement.
“Given the sensitive nature of the case, we will not comment further at this time.”
Police also stated that the community’s concern, support, and assistance are appreciated.
The infant had been placed in the storm water drain recently, and there’s no evidence to suggest it had gone through the system, according to Det Sen Sgt Stephen Cleal.
Detectives had appealed to the baby’s mother to come forward due to concerns for her health.
Additionally, anyone with information or CCTV footage from the area has been urged to contact the authorities.
Premier Roger Cook described the incident as a “horrifying series of events” that had shocked the community, to which people responded with flowers and teddy bears at the site.
“This incident deeply troubles everyone’s sense of humanity, involving a small child whose life has tragically ended,” he stated.
