Former cabinet minister Ed Husic has pledged to maintain a constructive stance from the backbench, despite criticizing his deputy leader during an explosive interview on Sunday. In the interview, Husic revealed his intention to address “important” issues, no longer restricted by the principle of cabinet solidarity, which requires ministers to support collective decisions. He accused Deputy Minister Richard Marles of being a “factional assassin” and suggested that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should have intervened to prevent his dismissal from the cabinet. Although Husic and former Attorney General Mark Dreyfus were dropped by the right faction, the cabinet had become overcrowded with members from the New South Wales right faction, resulting in Husic’s exit. Despite backbench criticisms, Albanese’s cabinet is considered highly experienced, with many members having served in the Gillard and Rudd ministries. The upcoming appointments to fill the vacant positions in the ministry were expected to be announced by Albanese on Monday.
