Football Australia (FA) has expressed strong disapproval of “unacceptable” statements made by a host on a radio show. The comments, which compared the national women’s football team, the Matildas, to “year 10 girls” and questioned the existence of men’s sports, sparked widespread outrage.
Marty Sheargold, a comedian and broadcaster, made these derogatory comments during his Monday show on Triple M Drive. He further stated that he would prefer to suffer physical harm rather than watch the women’s team at next year’s Asian Cup.
Reacting to the backlash, FA issued a statement on Wednesday expressing deep disappointment. The organization highlighted that such comments not only reduce the significant achievements and contributions of the women’s national team but also overlook the substantial impact they have made on sports and society in Australia.
The controversy arose after the Matildas suffered a 2-1 defeat to the world No.1 team, the USA, despite showing a marked improvement from their earlier 4-0 loss to Japan during the SheBelieves Cup in the U.S.
Sheargold’s rant, which also featured inaccuracies and disrespectful language regarding the team’s performance, was triggered when a co-host brought up the topic around 5:30 pm on Tuesday. His remarks were met with laughter, further incurring the wrath of listeners and players alike. He dismissed the women’s sport, suggesting that it should be replaced with men’s sports, which he found more desirable.
Fomer Hockeyroos player Ambrosia Malone and Matildas players Clare Wheeler and Alex Chidiac were among those reacting to the broadcast, with Malone particularly concerned about the potential impact on young girls who might be listening.
Both Sheargold and Triple M issued apologies the following day, acknowledging that their views did not reflect their values and commitment to support all sports. Sheargold admitted that his comments could have offended fans, and he apologized for any distress caused.
The controversy highlights the media’s role in fostering respectful and constructive dialogues about women’s sports and its players. The Matildas have been hailed for inspiring a new generation of athletes and breaking barriers in sports. As the team prepares to face Colombia in the SheBelieves Cup, FA reaffirms the importance of maintaining a respectful and professional approach in covering women’s sports.
