The genetic testing company 23andMe has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US to facilitate a potential sale of the business, following the resignation of its CEO, Anne Wojcicki. Wojcicki had been attempting to pursue a buyout of the company, but her efforts were rebuffed by the board. 23andMe, known for its salmon-based DNA test kits, has been dealing with the aftermath of a significant data breach that affected the personal information of nearly 7 million customers. As a result, the company has seen a decline in revenue, with many customers opting to delete their DNA data. 23andMe has taken measures to streamline its operations, including layoffs and the halting of therapy development projects. Wojcicki’s attempts to take the company private have included a recent offer to purchase the business at a significantly reduced valuation compared to its peak in 2021.
