At 6am on Tuesday, a ginger cat decided to go for a ride on the train in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The cat started its journey at St Albans station and ended at Flinders Street in the city center.
Check out the video of the cat.
On Wednesday, Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan shared the footage on social media in hopes of finding the cat’s owners. She pointed out in her post that the cat does not have a Myki card, but some kind passengers took care of the cat on the journey.
Allan also mentioned that it is a well-behaved cat who loves trains. If anyone is missing such a cat, they are advised to get in touch.
Social media users had some fun with the story, cracking jokes and puns about cats and trains. One user said it was “peak orange cat behavior,” while another joked that the cat must have been following its owner to the office, and suggested that working from home would have been more “purr-fect” and productive.
Metro Trains Melbourne confirmed that the cat was well cared for by passengers and then handed over to staff. The cat is now at the Lost Dogs Home, which is asking only the cat’s owners to come forward and claim their pet.
According to the state’s cat management strategy for 2025-35, tens of thousands of domestic cats end up in pounds and shelters each year, with only about 10% being claimed by their owners. In contrast, more than 50% of dogs are usually reunited with their owners.
