Most of the hundreds of thousands of attendees at the arts and music festival in Somerset will be departing the venue on Monday amidst a sweltering 30C heatwave.

Revelers have been treated to a vast array of performances since the event opened its gates on Wednesday. Highlights included Charli xcx’s electrifying performance on the Other stage, Rod Stewart’s afternoon singalong on the Pyramid stage, and surprise sets from Pulp, Haim, and Lorde.

However, the celebration must come to an end as the real world awaits – with traffic congestion on the A-roads and lengthy queues at Castle Cary railway station.

Forecasts predict clear skies for Pilton on Monday, with a maximum temperature of 30C, creating difficult conditions for travelers.

Glastonbury festival organizers advise avoiding travel by car on Monday between 8am and 5pm, when the journey could take up to nine hours, and recommend leaving between 1am and 7am on Monday if possible.

Glastonbury organizers have planned a traffic strategy with different directions of dispatch for each parking area to reduce the number of cars on each road.

For those traveling by train, a complimentary shuttle bus runs between the festival bus station and Castle Cary railway station throughout the event, and though queues are expected, they are not as severe as on arrival days.

For those interested, The Guardian offers morning news emails summing up the day’s key stories and their significance – simply sign up to stay informed.

Buses will operate from the festival bus station near pedestrian gate A to Bristol Temple Meads railway station on Sunday and Monday.

The festival license is in effect until 5pm on Monday, at which point retailers and contractors will begin to leave the site.
