Guard at Bondi Junction recounts fear and mayhem during inquiries into stabbing incident; Unseen for many, the turmoil and disorder we endured.

At the inquest into the fatal mass stabbing by Joel Cauchi at Westfield Bondi Junction, it was revealed that many security guards were so severely traumatized that they were unable to return to work. A senior security guard described scenes of panic and confusion as Cauchi, armed with a 30cm knife, moved through the mall. He emphasized the fear and chaos experienced by the guards, who still managed to show great courage in performing CPR and guiding people to safety. Communications difficulties were also highlighted, which caused delays in warning the public and reaching victims more quickly. The senior guard, who remains anonymous, acknowledged that while training is helpful, the reality of such an event triggers a “flight or fight” response. Only two of the guards have returned to full-time work since the incident. The inquest, expected to last five weeks, aims to learn lessons from the tragedy, including the need for better training and control room operations.
