Heavy rainfall causes death and displacement in Northern China | China

Heavy rain in Beijing and northern China has resulted in two deaths, forced thousands to relocate and raised concerns about further potential disasters such as landslides and flooding. State broadcaster CCTV reported two deaths and two missing individuals in Hebei province, where record-breaking rainfall of 145mm per hour was experienced in Fuping county, Baoding. The water ministry of China issued flood warnings to 11 provinces and regions, including the capital Beijing and surrounding Hebei.

Floods and landslides affected several villages in Miyun district of Beijing, with Fengjiayu being the most severely affected. Electricity and communications were disrupted in some villages, compelling the relocation of over 3,000 people from the area. The east Asian monsoon brought extreme weather patterns across China, impacting the world’s second-largest economy.

In Baoding, eight hours saw rainfall measuring 540mm, with Baoding’s average annual rainfall standing at around 500mm. The deluge affected more than 46,000 people, with 4,655 individuals forced to evacuate. Given China’s aging flood defenses, authorities closely monitor extreme rainfall, severe flooding, and potential displacement of millions, which could have a significant impact on the agricultural sector.
