A man entered the intensive care unit of a Pennsylvania hospital on Saturday, armed with a pistol and zip ties, taking staff members hostage before being killed in a shootout with police, resulting in the death of an officer and injuries to several others. The incident occurred at UPMC Memorial hospital, where three workers, including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian, as well as two more officers, were shot and wounded. A fourth staff member suffered injuries in a fall. The shooter, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, had previously visited the hospital’s ICU for a medical reason and intentionally targeted the staff. The investigation is ongoing, with initial findings suggesting that the officers acted justifiably in using deadly force. The slain officer was identified as Andrew Duarte, a law enforcement veteran with previous experience in the Denver Police Department. Duarte was known for his dedication and received recognition for his work in impaired driving enforcement. The Pennsylvania governor, Josh Shapiro, expressed his sympathy and admiration for Duarte and the wounded officers, emphasizing their bravery and sacrifice. The attack on police officers and healthcare workers is seen as a cowardly act. This incident is part of the ongoing problem of mass shootings in the US, which have led to calls for stricter gun control laws.
