Israel has deployed tanks to the city of Jenin in the West Bank for the first time in over two decades, as part of an expanded military operation in the territory which is expected to last at least a year. The Israeli defense minister, Israel Katz, stated that troops would remain in urban areas for the duration of the operation, displacing approximately 40,000 people who cannot return to their homes. The deployment comes in response to increased violence in the region following Hamas’ attacks in October and continued tensions following bus explosions near Tel Aviv.
