In northern Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez, law enforcement has uncovered a disturbing scene at a private crematorium, where 381 corpses were found piled up. According to Eloy Garcia, a spokesperson for the Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office, these bodies were deposited irregularly at the crematorium without being cremated. He described the corpses as being “stacked” haphazardly in various rooms, with no apparent order, merely “thrown… one on top of the other, on the floor.”
This gruesome discovery was initially reported to have 60 bodies found at the site, but the latest count has dramatically increased that number. The bodies, all embalmed, could have been there for up to two years. Families of the deceased were reportedly given some other material instead of ashes, suggesting a massive fraud and negligence by the crematorium operators.
Garcia condemned the lack of care and responsibility shown by the crematorium’s management, stating that such facilities are well aware of their daily capacity for cremation. “You can’t take in more than you can process,” he emphasized. One of the crematorium’s administrators has surrendered to prosecutors in connection with this incident.
The authorities have not confirmed whether these remains belong to individuals who died as a result of criminal activity. This discovery underscores the deeper issue of Mexico’s forensic system crisis, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of bodies, inadequate staff, and financial restrictions, as the country struggles to deal with the consequences of its longstanding problem with organized crime.
