Only 125ml servings are now frequently available on most menus instead of the once common 250ml option.
After surveying 20 top Michelin-starred restaurants, it is found that only The Ledbury in Notting Hill offers a medium-sized wine glass.
Hannah Crosbie, wine critic for The Guardian, noted this trend with great interest. She opines that it reflects the changing drinking habits in the society and a more health-conscious decision-making process among wine lovers.
People are becoming more adventurous with their wine choices, trying new varieties and opting for smaller servings to taste more, according to Crosbie.
Smaller servings also seem to be a favorite in natural wine-focused bars where the wine glasses are usually smaller due to the organic nature of these wines.
Along with changing consumer preferences, higher-priced wines are also seeing a shift towards smaller servings, as they could otherwise be as costly as a whole bottle.
However, not all establishments have adopted this trend. Chains like Pizza Express, Wetherspoon’s, and All Bar One still serve larger wine glasses, much to the delight of their customers.
It remains to be seen if this new trend will last or if people will continue to prefer their large wine glasses.
