The investigation into the death of a 20-year-old student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is looking into fraternity hazing as a possible cause. The student, Caleb Wilson, who majored in mechanical engineering and was a member of the school’s famous marching band, passed away on February 27th. School officials believe that an off-campus event might have contributed to his death, and are investigating the possibility of an Omega Psi Phi fraternity ritual being involved. Wilson’s family has expressed their grief, describing him as a “bright and talented young man” and their commitment to seeking the truth about the circumstances behind his passing. To honor him, the band played Stevie Wonder’s “Love Light in Flight” during a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. Following this incident, the university has suspended all club-recruiting activities and initiated its own investigation into the alleged hazing incident. If any campus organization is found to have violated anti-hazing policies, they will face severe disciplinary sanctions. The university also requires all clubs and organizations to undergo anti-hazing training, which was strengthened by anti-hazing laws passed following the death of a Louisiana State University student, Max Gruver, in 2018.
